\nWhen\u00a0Israel<\/b>\u00a0reclaimed Jerusalem in 1967, it made the hearts of devout\u00a0Jews<\/b>\u00a0skip a beat. Would this be the moment the\u00a0Temple<\/b>\u00a0would be rebuilt? And if so, where would that be? Of course, many\u00a0Jews<\/b>\u00a0said that\u00a0Jerusalem<\/b>\u00a0should be the place, on top of\u00a0Mount Zion<\/b>, where the temples of\u00a0Solomon<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Zerubbabel<\/b>\u00a0had been. It would be built in the same location that the\u00a0Temple<\/b>\u00a0was destroyed by the heathen nations,\u00a0Babel<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Rome<\/b>. But why build it in\u00a0Jerusalem<\/b>? What is so special about\u00a0Jerusalem<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Mount Zion<\/b>? What\u2019s unique about this small mountain, 800 meters above sea level, at the edge of the desert?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Many Names<\/b>\u00a0| The name\u00a0Jerusalem<\/b>, which literally means \u2018possession of peace\u2019, appears more than eight hundred times in the\u00a0Old<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0New Testament<\/b>. Other names used for\u00a0Jerusalem<\/b>\u00a0include\u00a0Ariel<\/b>,\u00a0City of God<\/b>,\u00a0City of David,<\/b>\u00a0City of Judah<\/b>,\u00a0Jebus<\/b>,\u00a0City of Righteousness<\/b>,\u00a0City of Truth<\/b>,\u00a0City of the Great King<\/b>,\u00a0Holy City<\/b>,\u00a0Faithful City,<\/b>\u00a0Salem<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Zion<\/b>. Some of these names appear only once, while others appear multiple times. The name\u00a0Zion<\/b>, however, appears more than one hundred and fifty times. When Zion is used in the\u00a0Bible<\/b>, it speaks of love, passion and intimacy. The\u00a0Lord<\/b>\u00a0has decided to make\u00a0Jerusalem<\/b>\u00a0a dwelling place for\u00a0His name<\/b>, meaning that the\u00a0Eternal God<\/b>,\u00a0Creator of heaven and earth<\/b>\u00a0has chosen to live there. It is\u00a0His holy mountain<\/b>\u00a0(Isaiah 11:9, 56:7, 65:11, 25; Zephaniah 3:11),\u00a0Mount Sion<\/b>\u00a0(Joel 2:1, 3:17) where\u00a0God<\/b>\u00a0dwelt (Psalm 74:2). The place is also called\u00a0the house of the God of Jacob<\/b>\u00a0(Isaiah 2:3) and\u00a0the house of the Lord<\/b>\u00a0(Ezekiel 8:14, 16; Joel 1:13-14; Micha 4:1-2 and Haggai 1:14).<\/p>\n

Temple as Dwelling Place<\/b>\u00a0| When the\u00a0Temple<\/b>\u00a0in\u00a0Jerusalem<\/b>, built by\u00a0King Solomon<\/b>, was dedicated,\u00a0\u2018the cloud filled the Temple of the Lord and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord (Shekinah) filled His Temple\u2019<\/i>\u00a0(1 Kings 8:10-11).<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Lord<\/b>\u00a0made His dwelling in the\u00a0Holy of Holies<\/b>\u00a0in the\u00a0Temple<\/b>, and He was present in the cloud, just like He had been present during the wanderings through the desert when the cloud had covered the tabernacle as it says in Exodus 40:34-38. Of course\u00a0Solomon<\/b>\u00a0knew very well that a\u00a0Temple<\/b>\u00a0made of stone could not contain\u00a0God<\/b>. At the dedication, he asked,\u00a0\u2018But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less is this Temple I have built!\u2019<\/i>\u00a0(1 Kings 8:27)<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Shekinah<\/b>, the glory of the\u00a0Lord<\/b>, dwelled in the\u00a0Temple<\/b>\u00a0that was built by\u00a0Solomon<\/b>\u00a0(2 Chronicles 7:1-2).\u00a0Ezekiel<\/b>\u00a0saw the\u00a0Shekinah<\/b>, the glory of the\u00a0Lord<\/b>, depart from the\u00a0Temple<\/b>\u00a0right before the\u00a0Babylonians<\/b>destroyed it in Ezekiel 10:18- 19 and in Ezekiel 11:22-23.<\/p>\n

The glory of the\u00a0Lord<\/b>\u00a0went up from within the city and stopped above the mountain east of it. That mountain is the\u00a0Mount of Olives<\/b>. From that direction it will return to the final\u00a0Temple<\/b>\u00a0as the permanent presence of the\u00a0Lord<\/b>,\u00a0the God of Israel<\/b>, to dwell among\u00a0His covenant people<\/b>.<\/p>\n

The Lord and His People are Returning<\/b>\u00a0| Ezekiel also sees how the glory of the\u00a0Lord<\/b>\u00a0returns to the last and final\u00a0Temple<\/b>. He describes the future, \u201cThere will be one king over all of them, and they will never again be two nations or be divided into two kingdoms.\u201d The mountains of\u00a0Israel<\/b>\u00a0form the heartland of\u00a0Israel<\/b>, also called the\u00a0West Bank<\/b>. It is not the\u00a0Lord\u2019s<\/b>\u00a0desire for this area to be part of a new\u00a0Arab-Islamic state<\/b>\u00a0with the name\u00a0Palestine<\/b>. The ten tribes of\u00a0Israel<\/b>\u00a0and the two tribes of\u00a0Judah<\/b>\u00a0will be united again, just as we see this happen in the return of the\u00a0Jews<\/b>\u00a0from the four corners of the earth, the\u00a0great<\/b>\u00a0Aliyah<\/b>\u00a0(Isaiah 43:5-8, Jeremiah 16:14-15). This means that the return of all twelve tribes is happening today, and not just the return of the two tribes who together are called\u00a0Judah<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Not all the people of the ten tribes were deported by the\u00a0Assyrians<\/b>, nor were all the people of the two tribes exiled by the\u00a0Babylonians<\/b>. Many remained in the land. About ten percent were taken away, the \u2018top layer\u2019 of the population. The rest stayed behind to work the land and to bring in taxes for the domineering hostile powers. People from the two tribes and the ten tribes have returned after the seventy years of\u00a0Babylonian<\/b>\u00a0exile between 600 and 500 BC. A few groups have moved further away, including the\u00a0Bnei Menashe<\/b>\u00a0(sons of Manasse), but they too are now coming home.<\/p>\n

\"\"
\n>> Part II: The Location of the Temple<\/b>
\nWhat do we know about the historical location of the\u00a0Temple<\/b>? It is certain that Solomon built this\u00a0Temple<\/b>\u00a0in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah. In 2 Chronicles 3:1 it tells us that Solomon began to build the temple of the\u00a0Lord<\/b>\u00a0in\u00a0Jerusalem<\/b>\u00a0on\u00a0Mount Moriah<\/b>, where the Lord had appeared to his father\u00a0David<\/b>. It was on the threshing floor of\u00a0Araunah the Jebusite<\/b>, the place provided by\u00a0David<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Mount Zion<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Mount Moriah<\/b>, the location of the\u00a0Temple<\/b>, are the same place. This is the same\u00a0Mount Moriah<\/b>\u00a0where\u00a0Abraham<\/b>\u00a0was willing to sacrifice\u00a0Isaac<\/b>\u00a0to the\u00a0Lord<\/b>, but where\u00a0God<\/b>\u00a0gave him a ram to sacrifice instead (Romans 8:32), where the\u00a0Apostle<\/b>\u00a0says that\u00a0God<\/b>\u00a0did not spare\u00a0His own Son<\/b>, but gave him as the sacrifice for sin.<\/p>\n

In Genesis 22:13-14,\u00a0Abraham<\/b>\u00a0looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So\u00a0Abraham<\/b>\u00a0called that place\u00a0The Lord Will Provide<\/b>.<\/p>\n

God Provides<\/b>\u00a0| This is the mountain that\u00a0Abraham<\/b>\u00a0called,\u00a0The Lord will Provide<\/b>\u00a0and that has remained a saying (Genesis 22:14).\u00a0Abraham<\/b>\u00a0was given what he needed for body, soul and mind.<\/p>\n

Mount Moriah<\/b>\u00a0is\u00a0Mount Zion<\/b>, the\u00a0Temple Mount<\/b>\u00a0in the heart of\u00a0Jerusalem<\/b>. Grace determines the character of the place of the\u00a0Temple<\/b>. It was not a place where people provided for\u00a0God\u2019s<\/b>\u00a0needs, as so many temples of other gods seem to do. It was a place where\u00a0God<\/b>\u00a0provided for the needs of\u00a0His people<\/b>\u00a0(1 Kings 8:31-53).<\/p>\n

>> Part III: The Rebuilding of the Temple<\/b>
\nThe preparations for the rebuilding of the\u00a0Temple<\/b>\u00a0are fully in progress today by all kinds of\u00a0Jewish<\/b>organisations. Among the\u00a0Dead Sea Scrolls<\/b>\u00a0found in 1951 in the caves of\u00a0Qumran<\/b>, there was a copper scroll. According to interpreters, this scroll mentions 64 places where\u00a0Temple<\/b>\u00a0treasures are hidden or buried.<\/p>\n

Rabbi Goren<\/b>\u00a0believes that objects from the\u00a0Temple<\/b>\u00a0are hidden deep beneath the\u00a0Temple Mount<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Among these treasures, there would even be the\u00a0Ark of the Covenant<\/b>\u00a0that was lost during the destruction of the temple by\u00a0Nebuchadnezzar<\/b>\u00a0in 586 BC.<\/p>\n

However, we must keep in mind what we read earlier in Jeremiah 3:16,\u00a0\u2018In those days, when your numbers have increased greatly in the land,\u2019 declares the Lord, \u2018People will no longer say, \u2018The ark of the covenant of the Lord.\u2019 It will never enter their minds or be remembered; it will not be missed, nor will another one be made.\u2019<\/i><\/p>\n

The Final Temple<\/b>\u00a0| According to Ezekiel 40-48, there will be a final\u00a0Temple<\/b>.\u00a0John<\/b>\u00a0also speaks about this\u00a0Temple<\/b>\u00a0as a\u00a0Temple of God<\/b>\u00a0in which true prayer will take place (Revelation 11:1-2). We read,\u00a0\u2018I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told to go and measure the Temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers. Exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles. They will trample on the holy city for 42 months.\u2019<\/i><\/p>\n

Paul and the Temple<\/b>\u00a0| The apostle\u00a0Paul<\/b>\u00a0says in 1 Corinthians 3:16-17,\u00a0\u2018Don\u2019t you know that you yourselves are God\u2019s temple and that God\u2019s Spirit dwells in your midst? If anyone destroys God\u2019s temple, God will destroy that person; for God\u2019s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.\u2019<\/i>\u00a0Paul<\/b>\u00a0almost never mentions the\u00a0Temple<\/b>as a building in\u00a0Jerusalem<\/b>.<\/p>\n

What did\u00a0Paul<\/b>\u00a0mean in 2 Thessalonians 2:1-8 when he speaks about the\u00a0\u2018man of lawlessness\u2019<\/b>\u00a0who will sit in the temple? Is it possible that in this case the concept of the\u00a0Temple<\/b>\u00a0relates to the church, as a\u00a0Christianity<\/b>ruled by anti-christian thinking such as the \u2018goddess of reason\u2019 that was worshipped in the\u00a0No\u0302tre Dame<\/b>\u00a0in\u00a0Paris<\/b>during the\u00a0French Revolution<\/b>? This could very well be. This temple\/ church\/Christianity will then be desecrated very quickly by the man of sin, a human being that wants to be like\u00a0God<\/b>. This was the temptation that Satan held out in the first book of the\u00a0Bible<\/b>. \u2018You will be like\u00a0God<\/b>\u2019, he said, \u2018When you disobey\u00a0God\u2019s<\/b>\u00a0instructions.\u2019 The last revelation of Satan is in this man of perdition, the antichrist, who puts himself on the throne of\u00a0God<\/b>\u00a0in the temple. You cannot imagine a greater abomination in the holy place than this. But does it necessarily refer to a literal rebuilt temple in which the antichrist will sit? Is that the\u00a0\u2018abomination that causes desolation\u2019<\/b>\u00a0that the\u00a0Lord Jesus<\/b>\u00a0speaks about in Matthew 24?<\/p>\n

The Return of Christ<\/b>\u00a0| We might not have to wait for a literal\u00a0Temple<\/b>\u00a0to be rebuilt in\u00a0Jerusalem<\/b>\u00a0and then desecrated by the antichrist as a historical figure. Perhaps the \u2018abomination that causes desolation\u2019 is already here. Islam dominates the holy place.\u00a0Jesus<\/b>\u00a0did not use the\u00a0Greek<\/b>\u00a0word \u03bd\u03b1\u03bf\u03c2 (naos) for \u2018temple<\/b>\u2019, but he spoke of the \u2018holy place<\/b>\u2019, \u03c4\u03bf\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2 \u03b1\u03b3\u03b9\u03bf\u03c2 (topos hagios), which could very well be\u00a0Mount Zion<\/b>\u00a0itself, on which the temple was built. Hatred and violence are preached against the\u00a0Jews<\/b>\u00a0(and\u00a0Christians<\/b>) in the mosques on\u00a0Mount Zion<\/b>, and this could eventually lead to more destruction. This could one day lead to a \u2018jihad\u2019 (holy war) against\u00a0Israel<\/b>. A war that\u2019s so violent and destructive that\u00a0Jesus<\/b>, in His eschatological sermon on the\u00a0Mount of Olives<\/b>(Matthew 24), tells the\u00a0Jews<\/b>\u00a0to flee. The desecration of this holy place will cease when the\u00a0Messiah<\/b>\u00a0Himself eventually appears. Then the holy place will be restored again. (Daniel 8:14).<\/p>\n

Sometimes I think the more people start talking about the rebuilding of the\u00a0Temple<\/b>, the closer we get to the return of\u00a0Christ<\/b>, the\u00a0Messiah ben David<\/b>!<\/p>\n
