Interview with Johannes Gerloff, author of “The Palestinians”

23 May 2019

Andrew Tucker talks with theologian and journalist Johannes Gerloff about his book “The Palestinians”. Johannes explains that he wrote this book in order to discover: who are the Palestinians? What makes them tick? What are their hopes and aspirations?

In this interview, he talks about the relationship between Jews and others in the Middle East. How does Zionism – the return of the Jewish people to the land of their forefathers – fit in with the existence of the Arab Palestinians? Was the creation of the State of Israel unjust? Does the existence of the state of Israel contribute to peace in the Middle East?

Johannes discusses the notion of statehood, which is a Western idea that does not fit well in Middle Eastern mindset.

Other issues discussed in the interview:

  • What are the hopes and aspirations of the “Arabs” in the Middle East?
  • What is the status of Israeli Arabs?
  • What is the nature of the conflict? Who is in conflict with whom, and why?
  • Does the “Two State solution” have a future?
  • What does the Bible say about all of this?
