Interview with Johannes Gerloff, author of “The Palestinians”

editor - 23 May 2019

Andrew Tucker talks with theologian and journalist Johannes Gerloff about his book “The Palestinians”. Johannes explains that he wrote this book in order to discover: who are the Palestinians? What makes them tick? What are their hopes and aspirations?

In this interview, he talks about the relationship between Jews and others in the Middle East. How does Zionism – the return of the Jewish people to the land of their forefathers – fit in with the existence of the Arab Palestinians? Was the creation of the State of Israel unjust? Does the existence of the state of Israel contribute to peace in the Middle East?

Johannes discusses the notion of statehood, which is a Western idea that does not fit well in Middle Eastern mindset.

Other issues discussed in the interview:

  • What are the hopes and aspirations of the “Arabs” in the Middle East?
  • What is the status of Israeli Arabs?
  • What is the nature of the conflict? Who is in conflict with whom, and why?
  • Does the “Two State solution” have a future?
  • What does the Bible say about all of this?

The Palestinians: Myths and Martyrs
Johannes Gerloff (journalist and theologian) has lived in Israel for the past 25 years. As Middle East Correspondent for Christian media in Germany, he has dedicated his journalistic skills to providing balanced reporting on issues and events in Israel in the Middle East. Over the decades, he has covered a multitude of significant events in times of relative peace, but has also put his life at risk reporting on the front lines in times of conflict and even outright war.

His many and varied contacts among Israelis, Arabs and Palestinians at all levels of society, have given him unique access to the hearts and minds of the people as well as deep insight into the issues they are dealing with. Besides excellent historical background and insight into the political developments in the Middle East, you will hear real testimony from people on both sides of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict as well as amazing personal experiences from Johannes himself.
