11) I am the good Shepherd

Wednesday 8 December

John 10:11-18

In this short passage from John 10, we learn about the aspects that make Jesus a good leader. He watches over us. He knows us and knows who we are. He is willing to sacrifice His life for us. Jesus has a deep relationship with the Father in heaven and He searches those who are lost.

In the background we hear Moses’ question as to who should succeed him. God is to appoint a shepherd to go out and come in before the flock of Israel. God’s people may not wander in the wilderness (Num. 27:15-17). However, Ezekiel 34 is also relevant, the major chapter in which the LORD promises that He Himself will gather His scattered sheep. Not only the sheep of Judah, but also those of the Ten Tribes. That is what Jesus will do as well, gather all the children of Israel. We saw this before.

This time we reflect on who Jesus is to us. He knows us as the Father knows Him. He looks at us with an enormous love and in the confusion of our days with its great questions, we may live under His protection. He keeps us from getting lost.

Prayer:
We thank You, Father in Heaven, that You have given us Your Son. We thank You that He cleanses us from all sin, that we may follow Him through life. He watches over us. Give us Lord Jesus Your wisdom, Your peace, Your faith.

We want to pray Psalm 23 , full of confidence and hope.
