A New Beginning

“Because on this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the Lord, you will be clean from all your sins.” Leviticus 16:30

On September 21, the Jewish people celebrate Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. It is a day of penance and repentance for the sins committed by each individual and by the people as a whole. But it is also a day that ends on a joyful note, as it celebrates God’s forgiveness of sins. Yom Kippur is a day of new beginnings. Through God’s grace, everyone is allowed to start afresh with a clean slate. Many centuries after the Jewish people had received the instructions concerning the Day of Atonement, Christ died on the cross to make atonement once and for all for the sins of the whole world. Through Christ’s work, a new beginning is possible for everyone, day after day. This prayer calendar centers on that new beginning.

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22–23.
