Starting School in the Land of Their Ancestors

In Israel, 2.6 million children started school yesterday. Among them, 180,000 set out to school for the first time, starting the journey at 1st grade. And of them, for thousands, it is the first day of first grade in their new country, their forever homeland.

I am thinking of the new olim children from India, the Bnei Menashe, the children whose families have been separated by over 2,600 years of exile, have finally come home.They are unaware of the generations upon generations before them, that couldn’t even fully articulate a dream of such a day.

And yet, they are making it come true and will learn to read and write in the ancient language of their forefathers, in the days before the exile.

While giving thanks for this miracle, we also add a prayer: that the lion will not need to roar again this year, nor the lioness to rise. That they may live in peace and joy in their land, be assuredly planted and grow to fulfill their own dreams, with the help of you, our dear friend that has and is with them.

Pray for Israel’s children as they begin the new school year. Thank God for the miracle of aliyah and for families returning home after centuries of exile. Ask for peace, safety, and joyful growth. May these children be firmly planted in the land, protected from harm.
