Three Years On: The World’s Genocidal Attack on the Jewish Nation

Three years ago today – 7th October 2023 – thousands of terrorists led by Hamas, joined by Palestinian Islamic Jihad and other factions from Gaza, broke through Israel’s border and carried out the deadliest attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust. Around 1,200 people were brutally murdered, most of them civilians, and 251 were dragged into Gaza as hostages. Families were burned in their homes, women were gruesomely raped and abused, and young people hunted down at a music festival.

The attack on 7th October opened a new phase in the long-standing attempt to destroy the Jewish State of Israel – physically, politically and legally.

Hamas and other Islamist entities are a pawn in the hands of Israel’s enemies whose goal is to delegitimize the State of Israel. Hamas prepared its attack in close cooperation with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Hamas has the support of Qatar. The goal of all the whole Islamic world (umma) is to have the Jewish State of Israel destroyed or removed from the United Nations. But it is not only Islamic countries. Many non-Islamic nations, political leaders and infuential media personalities, often motivated by a Marxist, humanist or even “Christian” mindsets, agree with them. They are all of one mind: Israel is the obstacle to world peace, and must simply disappear as a political and legal phenomenon. The Jews must never have their own sovereign nation. Palestine must be liberated from “the Zionists”.

In order to achieve this goal, these enemies of Israel use many interlocking strategies – including physical (kinetic) warfare, the media, diplomacy and politics, and the international legal system.

The immediate goal of the Hamas/PIJ attack on Israel was to induce Israel to react violently – and thus to enable Israel’s enemies to accuse and condemn Israel for committing genocide. This strategy has been extraordinarily successful. Over the past three years we have witnessed a veritable tsunami of antisemitism: across the globe, mobilizing and unifying people of all nationalities, colors, creeds and religions in deep hatred of the Jewish people.

The result is that Israel, not Hamas, has been isolated, vilified and condemned. It is as if the gates of hell were opened on that sacred morning of Simchat Torah three years ago.

Since then, open hatred and vilification of the Jewish nation has become mainstream. Satan is no longer secret about his endeavour to defeat the purposes of the Lord – bringing His people home to the land, in preparation for the coming of Messiah and the Messianic kingdom. As one Jewish writer put it: “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Satan seems to be using every resource at his disposal to violently thwart the purposes of God. Individuals, groups and nations that are committed to ideologies antithetical to the God of the Hebrew scriptures – whether it be Islam, Marxism or secular humanism – are all, whether they know it or not, potentially weapons in Satan’s hands.

The events of the past three years are a reminder that we are living in the last days – the days in which evil and good are growing together to their fulness.

October 7th 2023 was not just an attack: it was Satan’s declaration of war on the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all who belong to Him.

The “Genocide” Inversion

The 7th October invasion of Israel was more than terrorism. It was more than an act of military aggression. Genocide, under the 1948 Convention, means killing “with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group.” On October 7, intent requires no guesswork. It was a demonic attempt to wipe Jews from the face of the earth.

The planners wrote it down: documents recovered from attackers’ bodies, reported by NBC News, instructed units heading for Kibbutz Kfar Sa’ad to target its elementary schools and youth centre and to “kill as many people as possible.” One terrorist rang his parents in Gaza from a murdered woman’s phone: “Your son killed Jews!” he cried, boasting that he had killed ten with his own hands. Weeks later, senior Hamas official Ghazi Hamad promised the attack would be repeated “again and again.”

Hamas’s founding 1988 Charter opens with the declaration that “Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it.” Its Article 7 quotes a hadith about the end of days, when the stones and trees will cry out, “O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.” The charter defines the whole land as an Islamic trust that may never be surrendered and declares that “there is no solution for the Palestinian question except through jihad.” Hamas issued a softer-sounding policy document in 2017, but October 7 showed which text its fighters were following. Even the name of the operation, “Al-Aqsa Flood,” cast it as a holy war over a Muslim shrine.

As an essay in Sapir journal put it, for Hamas the conflict “is primarily religious, and at its heart is the annihilationist fantasy of ending the Jewish state.” In a December 2023 brief, Dr Sara E. Brown concluded that the house-to-house killing of families, children and the elderly, together with the charter’s explicit aims, bears the marks of genocidal violence. In 2025, 178 legal experts and historians, including former Nazi-war-crimes prosecutors, stated that Hamas was “the only party in the conflict to legally meet the definition of genocide.”

Yet within weeks the charge of genocide had been turned around and aimed at the victims. CAMERA UK’s Adam Levick notes that the Guardian published 11 pieces accusing Israel of ethnic cleansing or genocide in the 13 days after the massacre. Less than three months later, South Africa took Israel, not Hamas, to the International Court of Justice. Amnesty International followed with a genocide finding against Israel in December 2024. In September 2025 the International Association of Genocide Scholars voted that Israel was committing genocide, while declining to apply that word to Hamas. Days later, a UN Commission of Inquiry chaired by Navi Pillay reached the same verdict against Israel. Hamas welcomed the scholars’ vote as a “prestigious scholarly stance.”

A group that announced its aim to destroy the Jewish state, and then set out to kill as many Jews as it could reach, is treated as a party to a conflict. A state that warned civilians to evacuate, opened humanitarian corridors and fought an enemy embedded beneath homes and hospitals is treated as the génocidaire.

As author Gerald Posner wrote this week, the UN, Amnesty, B’Tselem and the genocide scholars all tested Israel against the Genocide Convention, but none tested Hamas. “A legal standard is only worth the name,” he observes, “if it is applied to every party.”

Every army’s conduct in war may rightly be scrutinised, and Gaza’s suffering has been real and terrible. But when a word coined in the shadow of the Holocaust is withheld from those who openly sought to murder Jews and handed instead to the Jewish state that defended itself, something has gone badly wrong.

Lowering the Bar for Genocide

Islamic-influenced countries (coordinated by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation – OIC) are bringing genocide cases to the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Their goal is to have Israel condemned for genocide. Once “convicted” of genocide – the “crime of crimes” – the Jewish State of Israel will no longer be eligible to participate in the United Nations. It will become a pariah state that must – at all costs – be destroyed.

Later this month the International Court of Justice is expected to hand down its judgment in The Gambia v Myanmar, the case over the Rohingya. The case brought by The Gambia (a small Islamic country with no involvement in Myanmar) is sponsored by the OIC. The judgment is likely to quietly rewrite genocide law, with Israel as the real target.

The Genocide Convention 1948 requires proof of a specific intent to destroy a group (this high standard of proof of intent is unique to the crime of genocide, and is known as “dolus specialis”). The Court has long held that where intent is inferred from conduct, it must be “the only reasonable inference.”

Strangely, the Islamic countries are being supported by a group of Western states. In a joint 2023 “intervention” submitted to the ICJ in November 2023 (after the Hamas attack on Israel), five Western states (the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Canada) urged the Court to adopt a “holistic” approach instead: inferring intent cumulatively from patterns such as high death tolls, child casualties, sexual violence and displacement, and giving special weight to UN fact-finding reports. In the memo’s words, this “effectively lowers the threshold for proving intent.” This intervention is a “procedural stalking horse” for South Africa’s case against Israel, where Spain, Ireland, Belgium, Slovenia and Netherlands are pressing the same approach.

A diluted standard will make it far easier for the ICJ to find Israel in breach of the Convention, including its duties to prevent and punish genocide, and to accuse states that arm Israel of complicity. It would also reward terrorists who hide among civilians, thus playing into the hands of the Islamist terror groups like Hamas. The genocide cases against Myanmar and Israel are thus part of a broader Islamic strategy to completely delegitimize the Jewish State of Israel. The genocide claim brought by South Africa against Israel was launched in close collaboration with Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran.

On this third anniversary, Christians who love truth should be among the first to remember the victims by their right name: not casualties of a “cycle of violence,” but targets of an attempted genocide.

More importantly, we must have our spiritual eyes open to what is unfolding before our eyes. We are literally living in a time when truth is being inverted.

“Take heed that no one deceives you… Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.” (Matthew 24:4, 11–12)

Jesus warned that the bridegroom would come at an unexpected hour, and only the wise virgins, lamps trimmed and oil in reserve, were ready (Matthew 25:1–13). These are days to stay awake and sober (1 Thessalonians 5:6), praying “always with all prayer and supplication… with all perseverance” (Ephesians 6:18). God has set watchmen on Jerusalem’s walls who will “give Him no rest” until He makes her “a praise in the earth” (Isaiah 62:6–7). Israel remains “beloved for the sake of the fathers,” for God’s calling is irrevocable (Romans 11:28–29). So let us keep our lamps burning, standing in the gap for His covenant people and praying for the peace of Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6).

Prayer

Pray that we would be like the wise virgins, awake and ready, our lamps trimmed and our oil in reserve, for we know neither the day nor the hour of the Bridegroom’s coming (Matthew 25:1–13).

Pray for a spirit of watchfulness in the Church, that we would not sleep as others do but stay alert and sober in these last days (1 Thessalonians 5:6).

Pray that we would persevere in intercession, “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit” and not grow weary (Ephesians 6:18).

Pray that God would raise up watchmen on the walls of Jerusalem who will give Him no rest until He makes her a praise in the earth (Isaiah 62:6–7).

Pray that in these very difficult days, the Lord will comfort, strengthen and protect the Jewish people, God’s covenant people, “beloved for the sake of the fathers” because His gifts and calling are irrevocable;

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, and for the speedy coming of the Messiah of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Romans 11:28–29; Psalm 122:6).

Who Is Committing Genocide?

The accusation of genocide against Israel serves a number of purposes for Israel’s opponents. Gerard Baker said that what is “especially malignant” about the use of the term genocide against Israel is that those propagating it know full well “its resonance in the history of the Jewish people, and they use it deliberately to equate what happened to the Jews at the hands of the Nazis with a military action today that is justified in self-defense.” He called this a form of Holocaust denial since it is “explicitly reducing the Holocaust to the level of a regrettable byproduct of a legitimate military campaign.” Accusing Israel of genocide is a way to delegitimize that military campaign, thereby denying Israel the right of self-defense.

Gaza: UN Commission Of Inquiry Accuses Israel Of Genocide

United Nations investigators on 16 September 2025 accused Israel of committing “genocide” in Gaza in a bid to “destroy the Palestinians”, blaming Israel’s prime minister and other top officials for incitement. The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry (COI), which does not speak on behalf of the world body and has faced harsh Israeli criticism, found that “genocide is occurring in Gaza and is continuing to occur”, commission chief Navi Pillay told AFP. “The responsibility lies with the State of Israel.”

Israel immediately said it “categorically” rejected the report, with the foreign ministry describing it as “distorted and false” and calling “for the immediate abolition of this Commission of Inquiry”.

The British Media’s Continuing Abuse of Oct. 7 Memory

In late October 2023, Shany Mor wrote that “many would think that an atrocity like Hamas’s Oct. 7 massacre in Israel would lead opponents of the Jewish state to temper their attacks”. Instead, he correctly observed, “from college campuses to mainstream media outlets, elite left-wing circles responded to the terror group’s barbarism by intensifying their denunciations of Israel”. Mor argued that this behavior is “an example of cognitive-dissonance reduction, the process by which people reconcile new information that contradicts their firmly held priors”. “Western activists for Palestinians”, he added, “are dedicated to two nearly theological precepts: that Israel is evil, and that no Palestinian action is ever connected to any Palestinian outcome”.

The ICJ’s Impending Myanmar Genocide Decision

If the ICJ adopts the “holistic” approach advocated by The Netherlands and others, it will set a very dangerous precedent for cases that will be decided subsequently, such as the South Africa vs Israel and Nicaragua vs Germany cases. The “holistic” approach will severely compromise the conduct of legitimate, lawful military operations by NATO and other Western states —particularly those directed against non-state terrorist actors who systematically engage in hybrid warfare, exploiting civilians as human shields, and operating outside the bounds of international law. This will degrade the integrity of the Court and of the Genocide Convention itself.

SCRIPTURE FOR THE WEEK: 2 Thessalonians 2:5-16

5  Don't you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? 6  And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. 7  For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. 8  And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. 9  The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, 10  and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11  For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12  and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness. 13  But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14  He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15  So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter. 16  May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope,
